May is Arizona Skin Cancer Awareness Month

 

According to the University of Arizona, Arizona has some of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world. It is estimated by the American Cancer Society that Arizona will have approximately 1,400 new cases of melanoma in 2013. Through a recent research study conducted by the University of Arizona, results showed that approximately 76,690 new cases of melanoma will be diagnosed this year, and over 9,000 people will die from the disease.  Melanoma incidence rates have been increasing for at least 30 years and continue to increase by almost 3% each year.

 

 

There are many types of possible skin cancer, which is simply an abnormal aberration of cells.  From Basal cell carcinoma to Squamous cell carcinoma to the potential fatal melanoma, it’s important to seek out a professional’s opinion on any moles or skin abnormalities that you might find.

 

 

A paramount cause of many skin cancers is exposure to UltraViolet radiation, or UV Rays, found in our Arizona sun, commercial tanning lamps and tanning beds. there is a reason why the Phoenix weatherman will share the UV Index for the day, especially during the summer months – it directly affects skin cancer risk. While other risk factors come into play, such as family history, immune system strength, and moles, exposure to sunlight is one of those risks that can be controlled.
