Walter Koppenbrink, M.D.

Dr. Walter Koppenbrink is a third generation physician, specializing in internal medicine and gastroentology. He attended the prestigious medical school at Washington University in St. Louis, and in 1976 moved to the Phoenix area for his residency and fellowship work at the Maricopa Medical Center. He most recently was in solo private practice before joining Family Practice Specialists early in 2015.
What he most enjoys about his practice is the opportunity to take care of several generations of the same family. Over the years he’s even had a few patients that were treated by his father and grandfather. He has two grown daughters and the Koppenbrink family medical tradition has continued into the fourth generation with his daughter Kimberly, an internist practicing in San Diego.
Dr. Koppenbrink is dedicated to providing personal attention to his patients and helping them to live the healthiest life possible. His recipe for healthy living includes getting enough exercise, maintaining a good weight, eating a plant-based diet that avoids bad carbohydrates and bad fats, and with good humor, points out that “French fries don’t count as plant-based.”
Dr. Koppenbrink enjoys outdoor sports, including scuba diving, snow skiing, and sailing. In addition to enjoying these activities together, he and his wife of 43 years are avid travelers who have had the privilege of visiting more than 90 countries, including the Middle East and Africa. A long-time oenophile, he started a wine club in ’78 when he first arrived in the Valley that is still active today.
